Leadership Studies – Understanding Spiritual Responsibility – By Olan Elujoba

In Acts 1:8 JESUS gave his disciples instructions that they should wait to be endued with power of the Holy Spirit, after which they would be WITNESSES for him in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria & the uttermost parts of the world. Being a witness comes with tremendous responsibility. The book of Acts records several accounts of believers who took up responsibility to work things out for societies just as they maintained close and intimate relationship with God, JESUS and the Holy Spirit.

Prior to that time, JESUS had commanded in Matt. 28:18-20 & Mark 16: 16-18 that disciples should go into all the world to preach, teach, baptize and raise disciples who would cast out devils and speak in tongues, etc. Also, in Matt 16:18, JESUS had mentioned that the church would be built upon the revelation that he is the son of God. This, Peter had declared, by the Holy Spirit. JESUS went further to state that believers would have powers to bind and loose things on earth while heaven will back them up and cause their declarations to manifest here physically. Matt: 16:19, Matt. 18:18

In Genesis 1:26 & 28, God revealed his intention that the human that he was creating was going to exercise dominion over everything here on earth, whether they are on ground, in the seas or in the air. Most people abandon such powers today by refusing to take responsibility. They would rather play victim of life and its harrowing circumstances.

So, while the unbelieving world wake up each day seeking to boldly exercise natural instincts to dominate this world, it seems that believers have trained themselves into suspending their senses of spiritual responsibility. Most believers are lagging behind in tangible life attainments because they would rather pray to have what unbelievers roll up their sleeves to achieve, without the unbelievers necessarily praying to God about it.

Many church-goers have been groomed to believe that when it comes to things of God and spirituality, they have no part to play but to wait on God until solutions manifests, without them playing any part in it. Many have been brainwashed to accept that “God is in absolute control” and “whatever will be, will be.” This is very far from Bible truth. Such mentality gives room for much of “paralyzed” Christianity that many, in and out of the body of Christ, have become wary of, today. While God has absolute power to do any and everything possible, yet, he chose in His sovereignty not to interfere with much of earthly events unless properly invited, or, in alliance with a yielded human being, especially a Christ believer, who takes upon him or herself to take committed steps to solve a life problem that God enables him or her to resolve.

Many church-goers have been groomed to sit-by and literally wait to go to heaven. Many messages in churches today are repetitions of salvation benefits without empowering people to own obvious challenging needs and causes around them, and to take no actions on God’s behalf.

Adam took actions on earth on God’s behalf. So did Abram, Noah, Moses, Joseph, David, Nehemiah, JESUS, Paul the apostle and so many more Bible Characters. Since after creation, God hardly did anything on earth by himself. He craved, sought, and found humans to work with, to bring into physical manifestation His desires, plans, wishes and divine will.

Without human collaborations, nothing could happen on earth. That is not so because God was incapable of getting things done automatically by himself. Rather, God self-imposed restrictions on himself. He created the earth for humans to reign in it as they choose and please. In Psalms, the writer said “ye are gods.” Psalms 82:6

Many Church leaders are busy churning out hot-air messages rather than creating movements of saved society change agents.

God is still looking for Christ believers who would own up some of the challenges in our societies today. He still needs those who would take responsibility to work alongside the Holy Spirit to effect Godly changes in societies here on earth, as God’s change agents. Read Isaiah 59:10 and the surrounding texts.

Taking spiritual responsibility is not a piece of cake. It usually demands painful, discomforting, and inconvenient sacrifices. It could even cost the submitted one’s life, just like it did cost most examples of Bible characters that we still read about to date. More Christians are needed to lay down their “lives”, wealth, resources, friends and families, and pay necessary prices to bring about God’s interests on earth.

JESUS said “Verily, Verily I say unto you, he that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also: and greater works than these shall he do, because I go unto my Father” in John 14:12

It is interesting to observe that many who complain and grumble about churches, church leaders and Christianity today, are those who refuse to take personal responsibility to fix whatever it is that they belly-ache about, by working alongside God or receiving the assistance of the Holy Spirit,

Here are some 8 areas that anyone of us can take spiritual responsibility for, on God’s behalf. You can also commit to help God change lives and their circumstances, if you are not already doing so.

Help God to reshape others’ lives by teaching and introducing them to possible means of receiving assistance from the Holy Spirit.
Help God to adjust people’s belief systems, habits and cultures by introducing new Godly belief system to them, even if they are strangers or resistant to the truth. You can always sell a new culture of Christ JESUS to unbelieving people!
Help God to show people how to drop off and remove unneeded life-situational baggage like bitterness, unforgiveness, vengefulness, etc.
Help God to NURSE broken hearts and mend them back to wholeness.
Help God to explain His person, principles and processes to others, by the help of the Holy Spirit.
Help God to feed human spirits until they produce God-desired fruits. Help God to liberate people from Sexual Pollution and Immorality.
Help God to reach people as you become His purveyor of divine & material benefits to them.
Help God to teach people to overcome fallen human nature states that manifests like wildness of Tigers (cats), unyielding rigidity of stumps, and/or unpredictable swinging moods of “Bipolars”. You can also to fix basic uncultured instincts of ungodly beliefs, extreme authority consciousness or territorial tendencies.

You may want to pray like I often pray for myself:

“Lord JESUS, I submit myself today, that you use me to achieve your will in my society & world today. I ask for and receive the help of the Holy Spirit so I can overcome obstacles and limitations that I shall experience as I take responsibility to fulfill assignments, here on earth, on your behalf. In JESUS name I prayed”
